Library Card & Book Checkout

Your account at Holt Library is created when you register for classes at SCC. You will need an SCC student ID card or other valid picture ID to borrow materials from the library.

Obtain your SCC ID card at New Student Orientation or contact the Cashier's office, Balsam 170, or call at 828.339.4290
Non-students can obtain a library card with us using this online form, OR email us at library@southwesterncc.edu
Book checkout period is 4 weeks and students and faculty may renew items up to 2 times.
Lost or damaged books will be billed at the cost of replacement and must be paid at the Business Office on the Jackson Campus.

Sociology provides students who are interested in exploring the social and cultural influences on society and the individual an opportunity to do so using theory and the scientific method. The sociology program at Western Carolina University provides a variety of courses and classroom experiences that guide students in applying the knowledge they gain to real life situations.

Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior. Sociologists investigate the structure of groups, organizations, and societies and how people interact within these contexts. Since all human behavior is social, the subject matter of sociology ranges from the intimate family to the hostile mob; from organized crime to religious traditions; from the divisions of race, gender and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture.
