Long ignored by global travelers, Nicaragua is emerging as the latest Central American favorite of the international backpacker set. David Rocco tours Managua, Grenada, Leon, and the tiny village of Riva. He samples the local cuisine, goes shopping for handicrafts, and hikes through ancient pirate fortresses. During his ten days of travel, he discovers a land of spectacular active volcanoes, untamed jungle, amazing Spanish colonial architecture, and miles of deserted beaches.

Discovered in 1570 by Diego García de Palacio, the ruins of Copán, one of the most important sites of Mayan civilization, were not excavated until the 19th century. Its citadel and imposing public squares characterize its three main stages of development, before the city was abandoned in the early 10th century. 12:46 minutes.

Las reservas naturales son áreas de conservación establecidas por decreto en cada país, donde participan organismos nacionales dependientes de los gobiernos para su protección, manejo y promoción. Sin embargo, al implementar iniciativas de desarrollo se reduce la participación de las comunidades cercanas o dentro de las áreas de amortiguamiento, debido en gran medida a los enfoques antropocéntricos y biocéntricos aplicados, que tienden a excluir y confrontar a las personas. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo incidir en el diseño de proyectos para emprender acciones de desarrollo y conservación a largo plazo con las comunidades bajo una metodología incluyente. Many people in the United States associate the small Central American nation of El Salvador as a country to be avoided because of the danger posed by violent gangs. Others, with longer memories, recall American involvement in the brutal civil war during the 1980s and the legacy of two million Salvadorians living in the United States. More recently, some politicians in the U.S. congress have warned that El Salvador was becoming a nation linked to other "radical" governments in Central and South America - a threat somehow to American prosperity and security. Yet, during its brief time in office, the new government has initiated a series of reforms to provide free health care to the general population, limit the cost of pharmaceutical drugs, help small farmers and small business owners, and enable students from all sectors of the population to attend school. Do its efforts represent a threat or do they provide examples of policies other nations might learn from?

El Salvador's prisons are bloody, brutal, and overcrowded. With 700 arrests a day, that level of overcrowding shows no signs of abating. And they have one of the highest homicides rates in the world. But rather than give up on prisons and prisoners, the people who are running the prison service have decided to change tack and reform the system. Their response is Yo Cambio. First change: the language. No longer referred to as inmates or prisoners now the incarcerated are referred to as people deprived of their freedom. This is an exploration of what a human rights-based approach looks like—how they did it and what people deprived of their freedom think of it.

Home to more biodiversity than either Europe or North America, Costa Rica has shown the world how to benefit from the environment without destroying it. This program treks across the Central American nation with a spotlight on ecotourism and how it fits into Costa Rica’s overall economy. David Rocco traverses wild jungle rivers by horseback, treks the cloud forest of Monteverde, and hangs from a harness 75 feet above the tree canopy for a wild cable ride in the rainforest. David also explores the golden beaches in the Gulf of Nicoya, views smoldering volcanoes in the central valley, and gets a close look at the endangered scarlet macaw, jaguars, and pumas on the border of Nicaragua.

Between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, the smallest country in Central America is now the planet’s champion in biodiversity. However, for several years, the success of ecotourism has been driving Costa Rica into runaway urbanization. Today the country is for sale, regardless of biodiversity. That is why the government has created the Environmental Tribunal. Battle has been engaged. The green judges have declared war on illegal property developers.

As a European destination, few areas offer as wide-ranging an allure as Spain. With new developments in every region, from cosmopolitan cities to cruise-friendly ports such as Barcelona and Valencia on the Mediterranean coast, Spain is opening its arms to incentive travel groups. Incentive planners are making a point of rediscovering Spain as their more seasoned clients, tired of close-to-home destinations such as Arizona or Las Vegas, begin to ask for the next great place. Valencia is playing host to the America's Cup race. The city was chosen because it offers some of the best sailing conditions in Spain. In Barcelona, reward winners in search of culture can visit the National Museum, which is famous for its collection of Romantic and Gothic art. While cultural destinations such as Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona are popular with many incentive groups, sometimes reward winners are looking for a unique place to just relax and unwind.

Spain is ruled by the Bourbons, becomes part of the Napoleonic Empire and eventually succumbs to a devastating Civil War and dictatorship under Franco before emerging as a modern, twentieth century nation and a model of democratic monarchy.
